In springtime, where the frozen ocean meets the open ocean, an area known
as the floe-edge is formed, creating one of Nature’s most amazing
landscapes. In late May and throughout June travel to the floe-edge takes
in magnificent mountain scenery, glaciers, ancient Thule sites and the
chance to see a variety of Arctic wildlife.
This expedition explores the land to the east of Pond Inlet, with Bylot
Island and Sirmilik National Park on one side and the towering glacier-clad
mountains of Baffin Island on the other. On route to where a comfortable
base camp is set up, time is taken to fully appreciate the landscape and
often icebergs are found frozen in the, sometimes six feet thick, sea
ice.
This trip has been described as one of the classic Arctic adventures.
Guided by experienced Polar Sea guides, ice conditions and weather will
determine our exact route.
During this time in Spring wildlife gathers at the floe-edge (or as it’s
sometimes called ‘the line of life") and there exists the chance
to see polar bears, a variety of species of seals, an incredible variety
of sea birds including thick billed Murre, Kittiwake, Guillemot, Ivory
Gull, along with many other species of gull. Narwhals, Bowhead and
Beluga whales also frequent these icy waters. Join us in a celebration of Natural wonders!
